Dark Matter (Syfy)

I saw the first three episodes of Dark Matter on Netflix. It’s a science fiction tv show about six amnesiac people who awake to find themselves on a spaceship. They also find an android who’s connected to the ship and the space hijinks begin. Who are they? How’d they get there? What are they supposed to do?

It’s an enticing premise, but the execution is less than ideal. It’s interesting to see how the characters are presented in broad strokes so the audience has an idea of their personalities early on but it’s disappointing that it easily falls into characters tropes we’ve seen many times. Badass female in charge. Guy with southern accent and poor impulse control who likes guns. Stoic Asian guy with swords. Quirky tech teenage girl who knows somehow knows more than everyone else. Kind noble-hearted guy who’s already kissed two people in three episodes. The only two characters who aren’t unoriginal are the friendly black guy (and not thankfully doling out wisdom) and a mildly perky android. The show tries to capture a Firefly vibe, while keeping things mysterious.

Each episode has ended on a cliffhanger-like twist, and while I appreciate that I couldn’t outright predict them, I don’t know if it’s enough for me to keep watching.
