I caught a few episodes of The Great British Bake-Off on PBS when I was visiting my folks and found it remarkably calming. Yesterday, I found out that one of the show’s seasons (season 5) is on Netflix. The contestants are mostly sweet, the finished products usually look amazing, and you cannot help but root for these amateurs who are baking because they love to.

There is no cash awards or professional glory, only an engraved cake stand. These people bake for baking’s sake and they want to see how they stack up against other people. American reality tv shows usually foster a mean atmosphere – a “I’m not here to make friends” mentality. This show has none of that. Do your best, do what you love, hope the judges love it too.

As Mary Berry would say, “Wonderful. Absolutely scrumptious.”
